A Message from the Principal

August 2022

Hello TJEMS Families!

I am Ms. Gailyn Laird, your new principal for the 2022-2023 school year! Many of you might recognize me as last year’s Resident Principal who worked closely with all of you to bring equitable and excellent instruction to our students and, among other things, forged positive relationships within our school community. During that time, I also had the luxury of witnessing the wonderful legacy and leadership that Thomas Johnson’s staff and families have to offer. As such, I welcome the opportunity to continue the positive leadership at TJEMS as we embark on our next phase of growth!

I have been with BCPS since 2012, working in various capacities where I have led & supported many students, families, and communities over the years. Through these diverse roles, I have implemented equity-focused and interpersonal leadership initiatives that have fostered positive school climate and culture. I remain committed to safety, education, and equity for all students. I am proud that TJ is one of the highest performing schools in the district and my plan is to continue this upward trajectory towards greatness over the next school year.

This year is very special for me personally, as my daughter is finishing up her teaching degree at Towson University. She will graduate with honors in May 2023 and plans on joining the BCPS family as an early childhood educator. I could not be any prouder to pass the torch on to her as she is indeed the light of my life.

TJ, thank you for this opportunity to continue to serve all of you. I look forward to working together to build community and actualize our school’s vision. The teachers, students, staff, and community members of TJEMS are absolutely magnificent. Together, we can inspire and lead all students to their highest potential.

Enjoy the rest of your summer. I can’t wait to see all of your wonderful faces soon

Sincerely,

Gailyn Laird, Principal
